Hua Hin: From Fishing Nets to Royal Retreat

Today, we know Hua Hin as a famous and beautiful beach city, but have you ever wondered what it was like a long, long time ago? Before the hotels, the big roads, and the crowds, Hua Hin was a very different place. Its story of becoming the city we love today all starts with a simple fishing village and a new train track.

A Quiet Life by the Sea

Let’s go back more than 100 years, to the early 1900s. Hua Hin wasn’t even called Hua Hin yet. People knew it by other names, like Baan Samore Riang, which means “village with rows of anchors,” or Baan Laem Hin, which means “village on the stony point.”

These names tell you what life was like. It was a small, peaceful village where most people were fishermen. They lived a simple life. Their days were spent on their boats, catching fish in the sea. The village was quiet, beautiful, and mostly unknown to anyone outside the area.

The Train That Changed Everything

Then, in the 1920s, something happened that would change this little village forever. A new train line was built. This was the Southern Railway, a huge project that connected the big city of Bangkok with the towns in the south of Thailand.

Before the train, travelling was very slow and difficult. But now, this new railway runs right past the sleepy fishing village. Suddenly, it was easy to get there from Bangkok. For the first time, the village was connected to the rest of the country.

New Faces Arrive

Because of the train, people from Bangkok started to hear about this lovely, quiet beach. Important and wealthy families from the city were looking for a place to escape the busy city life. They wanted fresh air and a clean, peaceful sea. Hua Hin was the perfect spot.

The most important new visitors were the members of the Royal Family. When they discovered this beautiful place and started to visit, it made the village very special. Everyone wanted to go to the same place the royals loved.

This was the real beginning of Hua Hin. The new train line was like a key that unlocked the door, turning a small, unknown fishing village into a famous seaside retreat for everyone to enjoy.
